An intense, potent fragrance, it evokes the citrus groves and sun-drenched shores of Sicily from where Pietra d’Avola takes its name

When you enter a room, what is the first thing that immediately engages your senses? It could be the colour of the walls — strong, bold shades will attract more attention than softer, more subdued hues. The lighting might be considered, depending on its brightness and tone it has infinite potential to create an atmosphere. Furniture, objects, finishing, room size, music — all of these things are important elements to consider when encountering a new space. But the most powerful sense of all — to evoke memories, incite emotions or create a mood — is smell.

At Salvatori, we prize holistic design. We do not simply want to create objects, furniture or finishings for a space; our goal is to build up environments that speak to our values and sense of purpose. Which is why our latest object for the home, Pietra D’Avola candle by Piero Lissoni, is our collection’s perfect addition.

The scent of Pietra d’Avola was inspired by its namesake limestone, a dark and elegant stone that varies in colour from greyish brown to almost black. We built the scent around a Mediterranean profile: starting from a base of white musk, amber and tobacco, it was further honed by adding woody and floral notes of cedar and jasmine. The scent peaks with fruity flourishes of mandarin, green lemon and fig. An intense, potent fragrance, it evokes the citrus groves and sun-drenched shores of Sicily from where Pietra d’Avola takes its name.

Lissoni’s design of the candle’s vessel blends seamlessly with his elegantly appointed Home Collection. The candle is housed within a circular plinth made of the black Pietra D’Avola stone. A column of fluted grey-smoked glass rises to envelop the wax, creating a delicately moody vessel to house the flame. “The stone, like the foundations of a building, becomes the supporting structure from which the objects are raised,” Lissoni explains of the concept.

The project brings full circle Salvatori’s vision for the home. More than just accessories to exist in isolation, we desire to create a total environment of tranquility, luxury and excellent design.
