Designer mirrors are the ultimate ornament, combining flair and personality with functionality. We look at how to choose the right one for each room

All you need to know about choosing a designer mirror

Mirrors and interior design have long been synonymous with each other. This simple, functional accessory has become a must-have object that adds value and personality to an interior décor scheme. Far beyond a mere instrument for checking your appearance, applying make-up, shaving or doing your hair, it is an indispensable décor element.

In this article, we look into the topic in detail and examine four examples of Made in Italy designer mirrors that add the perfect combination of style and functionality to the various rooms of the home.

Key characteristics of a designer mirror

In general, a designer mirror has 3 key characteristics:

  • It is both functional and ornamental
  • It amplifies the perception of space, creating the illusion that a room is larger than it actually is
  • Its reflective properties have the effect of increasing the amount of natural light in an environment

With these fundamental three tenets in mind, it goes without saying that the choice of mirror style should not be based on personal taste, but should also work within the space it is positioned. As obvious as it might seem, we will point out that a mirror designed for bathroom use may not work in a living room, and vice versa. That’s why the first thing to do is take a close look at where it will be placed before deciding upon the style of a mirror.

Choose the right mirror for the right space

As we have already noted, different environments call for different types of mirrors. In the same way, every room fulfils a specific function, even the most designer of all designer mirrors should respect this. We share advice to help you choose the right mirror for the principal spaces in a home, ie living room, entranceway, bedroom and bathroom.

A designer mirror for your entranceway

An entranceway is often neglected when it comes to interior décor, with many considering it merely as somewhere to plonk coats, shoes and miscellaneous items such as keys. However, it is also the last chance before leaving the house to check your appearance so it calls for a large mirror, such as our Quadro. With its 7-cm deep brass frame, it is not only striking to look at but also offers a handy ledge for placing small objects. What’s more, it is eco-aware, with its mirrored surface 30% made of recycled glass and its protective coating made from a water-based formula. With Quadro, you have that elusive mix of practicality and style in a single accessory.

A designer mirror for the living room

The living room is invariably one of the most, well, lived-in areas of the home, hence the name! It’s where we relax, spend time with other members of the household and entertain guests. As such, it’s a room we take particular pride in when it comes to decorating it and is the ideal space for showing off our personality and maybe even our more eclectic side, in which case, what better than our Neighbors mirror? Designed by Stephen Burks, this bold and colourful product uses some of Salvatori’s most vivacious marbles, and the result is an eye-catching contemporary statement piece that is as much a work of art as an accessory.

A designer mirror for the bedroom

While the primary function of our bedroom may be rest, it is also the space we get ready, and as such includes all the necessary paraphernalia, such as a wardrobe, chest of drawers, dressing table and, of course, some form of mirror. An elegant room calls for elegant and discreet accessories, such as the Fontane Bianche table mirror, an exquisite cone of white or dark brown natural stone topped by a tiltable circle of glass. Perfect for activities such as applying make-up, this practical piece can also be classed as a miniature sculpture.

A designer mirror for the bathroom

The bathroom is perhaps the space in the home where a mirror is most necessary, but that doesn’t mean that any old solution will do. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. It calls for a large and practical mirror, but that doesn’t mean there’s no room for aesthetics. Our Anima backlit mirror fits the bill perfectly. Designers Yabu Pushelberg wanted to strip natural stone back to its essence, applying the sensibility of clay to this traditionally tough and unyielding material. The result is an elegant accessory with soft, inviting curves and backlighting for enhanced visibility. With an eye on sustainability, it features a non-toxic coating and recycled glass.

So, that brings us to the end of our stroll around the house, stopping to check our appearance with a series of stylish mirrors. These are, of course, just a sample of the many different types you can choose from, so if you have any questions, please drop us a line and one of our design consultants will be delighted to help you.
