Stone Tatami reinterprets traditional Japanese matting to create a detailed, tactile texture
Salvatori is proud to announce that our Stone Tatami surface designed with Piero Lissoni has been selected as a finalist for the Tile + Stone Wall Covering: Designer Collaboration category at the 2019 NYCxDESIGN Awards. Now in its fourth year, the awards were established by Interior Design magazine to celebrate achievements in over a dozen disciplines across design and draws thousands of visitors and designers to New York for a series of exhibitions, installations, trade shows and panel discussions. Judged by a jury of industry leaders, the winners of the awards will be announced at a ceremony at held at Pier 17 in New York on 20 May.
Stone Tatami, designed by long-standing Salvatori collaborator Piero Lissoni, reinterprets traditional Japanese matting to create a detailed, tactile texture. Versatile and customisable, it can be laid in a staggered formation or with a border to emulate the traditional pattern.
“Were it not for shadow there would be no beauty” writes Japanese author Junichiro Tanizaki in his 1933 essay In Praise of Shadows.
Designer Piero Lissoni has created an elegant take on ancient Japanese matting, reinterpreting it in a selection of stones which echo the natural tones of the rush and cotton traditionally used.
